Classic Green Beans Au Gratin – Food Wishes ctm magazine

It’s always tricky posting Thanksgiving side dish recipes, since most families tend to gravitate toward the familiar and comforting, verses the new and interesting. This is especially true for a side dish like green bean casserole, which is why I decided to post this. It’s familiar, comforting, new, and interesting, so we have everything covered. Enjoy!

I think this would be a nice side dish for your beef Wellington for a date night…

I made mine with chunks of lobster

  • Daan Demeyer on January 13, 2021

Some nutmeg might elevate this dish even more

Hey Chef John! Love your videos! I’m watching this video right now & was wondering if you would make French style green beans? Their my favorite! Thanks again for the cool videos! 💜

If you don't want to eat like a savage you're supposed to eat the slime. Theres plenty of slime for everyone!

Made this last Thanksgiving. It was the first time I had even heard of Comte. It was delicious. My mistake this time was that I forgot to make the Gratin – Au ; – ( Too excited, I guess. We did enjoy this and ate it in a couple of days. We used the last the Comte this evening and made Gougeres! Who knew I'd be taking private lessons from Chef John!

  • Am Edgington on March 24, 2021

    Can you use frozen beans

  • Robin Betts on April 11, 2021

Pro tip for trimming the beans, if they come in a loose bag from the supermarket. Shake the beans down in the bag, all lined-up-like, and slice the ends of the beans and the end of the bag off, all in one throw.

I did this with broccoli and squeezed a lemon on it before eating the WHOLE THING

  • Donna Braden on May 5, 2021

Well is this delicious!! Yesterday I made Chef John's Ultimate Berry Crumble and the friend I shared a piece with asked me to make her a batch for her fam. And now I just made this dish and YUMMO! I used yellow sharp cheddar off the block and parm off the block and seasoned everything like he said. Both these dishes were so darn easy to make and I am just pleased as punch. Thanks, Chef!!

Implant my bush beans in three short rows in a leg wheelbarrow. They love it, it’s mobile, and I get tons, then in August I plant more between plants, I’m in bean heaven

  • Jude Frazier on August 19, 2021

    Oops large wheelbarrow I meant

  • Deborah Brown on September 26, 2021

Looks delicious! I would add just one thing though…a little fresh nutmeg in with the heavy cream. Definitely making!

  • RvBadlands2015 on November 14, 2021

I boil the green beans in chicken stock.

I'm from the UK and one of my American friends has invited me over for Thanksgiving (is that one word?) and asked me to do Green Beans (as if I knew what that was) . . . I'm going to do this recipie and hope it's as good as 'his old grandmother used to make'.

  • Felicia Villermaux on November 24, 2021

If you trim them with the knife and cut them you’ll save time but won’t get that satisfying pop doing it by gang gives you

  • Felicia Villermaux on November 24, 2021

This looks amazing! I’m not a huge fan of green bean casserole. I usually cook my fresh green beans with lots of fresh garlic, butter, olive oil, s&p, sazon and top with locatelli cheese 🤤 but I’d love to give this a try!

  • No One on November 24, 2021

I'm a working chef and I always come to this channel for good ideas happy thanksgiving guys!

  • T Bjorn on November 24, 2021

Homemade mushroom soup only touches my green beans!

  • Anna Hopewell on November 26, 2021

    You don't need
    head cheese, really.
    This looks like an
    amazing dish.
    It won't beat green
    beans simmered with
    fatback, though.

  • Patty Ward on November 27, 2021

My son reprimanded me when I once cut both ends off of the green beans.

  • Samuel Bush on November 29, 2021

It's not a grat-on, it's a great- in! French do NOT say "on" when they pronounce that word! English KILL that word! It's closer to "gratan"

  • Judy Dwiggins on November 30, 2021

I love it. I was looking for a dish like this to serve for Thanksgiving for my granddaughter who loves green beans but is a vegetarian. She loves cheese so can’t go vegan. This is perfect!

  • cathy phegley on December 4, 2021

You’re fun! Thanks for this excellent perfect instruction. Yum!

  • Ginoris Baber on December 4, 2021

    Yum !

Ralphie wiggum quote 🤣"it tastes like burning"

  • Leslee Gill on December 10, 2021

If you make your own mushroom soup for green bean casserole it makes a huge difference – even my brother in law, who finds traditional green bean casserole less than palatable, loves mine and asks for leftovers. But I'm going to try this because it makes my mouth water just looking at it – big plus: no canned fried onions required.
