Nicholas is now a tropical storm again after making landfall overnight as a hurricane. It’s expected to continue to have a significant impact in Southeast Texas, especially along the coast.
As Nicholas continues moving across land, the storm is weakening. As of 7 a.m., Nicholas is moving to the north-northeast at 60 mph with wind gusts of 85 mph.
Hurricane Nicholas made landfall around 12:30 a.m. as a category 1 hurricane on the eastern part of the Matagorda Peninsula, about 10 miles west-southwest of Sargent Beach. In the 4 a.m. update, the NHC downgraded it back to a tropical storm.
Flash Flood Warnings have been issued for Jefferson, Orange until 11 a.m. Rain totals will be around 5 to 10 inches, with locally higher amounts of 15 to 20 inches possible. Traveling is not recommended during flash floods.
