Ex-CIA director: ‘Staggering’ cost to Russia in Mariupol ctm magazine

The commander of the Azov Regiment issued a video message from inside Mariupol’s Azovstal steel plant saying that the top military leadership had “issued an order to preserve the garrison soldiers’ life and health and stop defending the city.” Former CIA Director Gen. David Petraeus (Ret.) discusses the cost of the battle for Mariupol with CNN’s Kate Bolduan. #CNN #News

Russian aims: that they might bring them into subjection to the accomplishment of their designs, that they might usurp great power over them, and also that they might gain power over them… by bringing them into bondage.
The Ukrainian aim: to support their lands and their houses and their wives and their children, that they might preserve them from the hands of their enemies, and also that they might preserve their rights and their privileges, yea, and also their liberty,

9:11 – …"the last hope/symbol of Ukranian resistance against the Russians_(…in Mariupol)_" — Why are you implying this is the last holdout between Russia and the entire rest of the country?

General Petraeus probably thinks the invasion of Iraq was fully justified despite all the justifications crummy Liz Cheney's father Dick Cheney gave were disproved. Wasn't he the same General that almost started a war with Russia over Kosovo only to have cooler heads in Washington stop him?.

TIMELINE 1:57 – Well, weve gone from seeing those little white Toyota pickup trucks with mounted guns in the beds driving around in the desert to seeing really nice black SUV Lexus with "Z" on the back windshield. Russia should take the money they wasted on Lexus SUV's and upgrade their tanks next time LOL! DID YOU SEE THOSE LUXURY LEXUS SUV'S!?! DAMN, they are really nice! LOL! TIMELINE 1:57

It's achievable in so far as the West supports it 🙂 The US has only to say the word, so his argument is disingenuous.

America and the West don't have a clue how the world works. Russia is pure power and iron. America and NATO are soft and WEAK. Russia and China will rule the planet for the foreseeable future. America and NATO shoved Russia into the arms of Chinese. LMAO

We the People have been told in the Past that Putin was a very smart political leader. Today we all can see Putin is a very dumb leader, because his decision to invaded Ukraine have been a total political failure on all fronts. The world no-longer see Russia as havung a powerful military force.

THE GOP-MAGA CONFEDERACY HAS TWO ITEMS ON ITS ELECTION MANIFESTO; MAGA and TRUMP'S BIG LIE. MAGA promises a white power autocracy and TRUMP’S BIG LIE provides an excuse to sabotage democracy, rig the elections, and empower the autocracy mission. The huge majority of GOP candidates support both!

I am sure many of the Mariupol POWs now in Russian hands will soon reveal themselves as neo-Nazis.

  • Historian on May 20, 2022

Ukraine's leaders knew from the war's start that they could not hold the Sea of Azov coast, and chose to focus their defenses around Kyiv. Mariupol's defenders were left hanging out of military necessity. Their situation reminded me of the Philippines in 1941-2. Any attempt to reinforce or rescue them would have been suicide for the relieving forces over such long distances. Still, any gains the Russians made there were pyrrhic, like the general said, and the defenders delayed the Russians for two months. The Azov men wouldn't leave since they figured they were dead anyway. They knew their neo-fascist past gave Vladolf an excuse for his mission to "de-Nazify" Ukraine. Bad luck for the marine prisoners who will be lumped in with them by the Russians. The Red Cross registry may be the only thing that saves them, but I fear not all. Much talk in Russia calling the Azov fighters war criminals. No death penalty in Russia, but that didn't save many of Putin's enemies. Anyway, I hear there is a death penalty in DPR and LPR, so if they try the prisoners there, I fear the worst. I hope for a prisoner exchange, but I'm afraid that hope is forlorn.

Biden’s approval dips to lowest of presidency: AP-NORC poll
Of particular concern for Biden ahead of the midterm elections, his approval among Democrats stands at 73%, a substantial drop since earlier in his presidency. In AP-NORC polls conducted in 2021, Biden’s approval rating among Democrats never dropped below 82%.
Overall, only about 2 in 10 adults say the U.S. is heading in the right direction or the economy is good, both down from about 3 in 10 a month earlier. Those drops were concentrated among Democrats, with just 33% within the president’s party saying the country is headed in the right direction, down from 49% in April.
President Biden's approval rating among Hispanic Americans has plummeted to 26%, according to a Wednesday poll from Quinnipiac University.
Biden is less popular among Hispanics than any other demographic, including age and gender ,the poll found. The same Quinnipiac poll conducted last year put Hispanic support for Biden at 55%.

Mariupol is a resource-rich location and the key to giving Russia a full land bridge to Crimea. It is tragic for Ukraine to lose it. The heroes who gave their lives and the citizens who died and suffered for three months did not suffer in vain. By tying up the Russians, it allowed the defense of other parts of the country. I dearly hope that Odessa and the blockage of the sea can be turned around. Ukrainians cannot even export their grain and people in Africa and Asia will starve as a result. Putin is a war criminal a thousand times over and has all their blood on his hands.

Despite the fall of Mariopol Putin has lost. Ukraine has exposed Russia and now a host of smaller countries around Russia no longer feel intimidated; even Finland and Sweden are joining Nato without fear and more countries shall follow suit. Putin has achieved exactly the opposite of what he wanted to do which was to intimidate everyone who want to associate themselves with Nato. Thanks to the brave soldiers of Ukraine.

Russians attacking Ukrainians on defense is not the same as Ukrainians attacking Russians on defense. I have doubts the Russians at the rank and file level have the commitment to defend what is Ukrainian territory.

"The cost to them [Russia] has been staggering" The cost has been staggering to the Ukrainians not to Putin. Their homes have been distroyed and their livelihood has been ruined. The director needs to stop giving a crap about the cost to Putin and the Russians!

  • Artstrology on May 20, 2022

There is no winning in war. Winning is when you live and do not kill others. Surety of loosing happened when the first shot was fired. This general should have said that with emphasis. this is how war is normalized.

  • Y’all might want to update your narrative. It’s so far from reality, you sound f***ing crazy. He sounds like Charlie Sheen on a bender: “winning!”

  • William of Y on May 20, 2022

even on the lowest estimates of Russian losses, this is an epic failure by any measure. The result, ONE city was taken, Finland and Sweden will join NATO, Ukraine with help from the EU/USA will be more modern than the whole Russian military and though the Russian Ruple is strong now, it will take a huge nose dive soon enough. Putin and his military look like complete clowns.

The trolls really come out when Petraeus is interviewed. I have never read so many anti-American comments in such a brief time since the "special operation" began. I wish I had the money paid out to all these contributors, but in dollars, not rubles. What time is it in Moscow? They must be working them around the clock, 3 shifts. Ah, well, spasebo. Do svidaniya!

  • Nicholas Maude on May 20, 2022

For the Russian army the Battle of Mariupol has proven to have been a pyrrhic-victory.

  • The Russians stated goal of the SMO was to denazify Ukraine. So many of the top Nazis were in that hole, and they are going to Russia, the DPR and Lugansk to be tried for war crimes. Whoever has the best case, would be my guess.

The Azov and Azov stiffened forces have killed 16,000 people in the Donbass since 2014. Its payback time, and no one will take that away from them. Just guessing but there are probably a couple of hundred they don't care much about, the rest they hate with a passion.

    A bit clearer now?
