I’m Pacific Islander. Not from New Zealand tho. But I feel like this applies to all of us in the Pacific: The fact that our ancestors had to eat EVERY plant to find out which ones were edible. (RIP to the ones that ate the poisonous ones). For example, in this video, the Maori people climbed the trees, tasted all the fruits and berries on all them, and found out the purples berries on that specific tree were delicious and edible. They also ate that one plant to find out that it was spicy. I am thankful for the ancestors and the sacrifices that they made for us.

Some of the things they are cutting with the machete could be done more efficiently with some type of shears or snips. Do they stay with the machete to uphold the traditional methods and honor the heritage?

Really wish Gordon came to Fiji to eat lovo food, even Tonga or Samoa.

In NZ's history, say b4 AD 1800, there was not much respect for the environment by the 'indigenous people. It was then regarded as a 'gift' from their gods and there to be used as saw fit… and they didn't even have a scientific understanding of the "environment as modern people have".
Now that is all reimagined with "respect" and revisionist ideas to make it all that more noble – and by extension the society regarding it… I am not saying this "new environmental attachment and declarations" are right or wrong – but I am saying that the revisionist ideas are a corruption of history and the 'culture as it actually was' e.g., the same culture that led to the extermination of 30 species of Moa and so on…
