Start by installing and activating the Avatar Shaper plugin.
Go to Settings, Avatar Shaper to configure.
From here you can choose the shape you want, the custom radius, enable shadows or colors, and if you want a glosss finish.
If you are an advanced user you can enable a function to set in your theme.
You can now look at the site to see your shapes in action.
