Summary of this tutorial:
To hide featured images from specific posts you would want to start by activating and installing the Hide Featured Image plugin.
Simply edit the post that you want to hide your featured image and in the post edit screen there will be a new hide featured image meta box.
Once you check the box the featured image will be hidden from the home page but will still be available in the post itself should you want to make it visible again.
The featured image is not deleted from your post or unset as the featured image, it is simply hidden.
The plugin will also work with custom post types that have featured image support.

This plug in doesn't work.
As at September 2018, 'Remove Featured Image' by Sumit Chattha does.
this only works on certain themes, i tried it on one and it worked but another would not work
