Hungarian Potato and Sausage Soup – Food Wishes ctm magazine

All hot soups can nourish the body, and comfort the soul, but some seem to do so more profoundly than others, and this Hungarian Potato and Sausage Soup is a perfect example. By the way, I’ve never been to Hungry, so I’m not sure how authentic this is, but if I ever go, I really hope they have this soup.

I'm pleased that using two spoons was noticeable to you. Washing your own dishes means you're probably not a spoiled prima donna.

We're fortunate to have a small sausage maker locally that was started by a family from early 1900 Austria and they use all the old recipes from all over the glorious Habsburg Empire including a great Hungarian sausage

Just tried it, tastes amazing! Especially when the weather's bad! I just added a little chili and substituted the vinegar with white wine.

I have everything but cabbage or I would have made this today

As a Hungarian I vehemently disagree that Spanish paprika will work. You must use Hungarian paprika or it’s not Hungarian potato soup.

  • Tanushree Majumder on November 10, 2021

    Goddamm this looks delicious

Great recipe, but, as a Hungarian, I gotta say something: growing up, I never had someone dump a dollop of sour cream into my food. Not a once. Had that happened, I would've refused to eat it.

Not sure where that sour cream idea comes from, but it's not from Hungary. This soup doesn't need the sour cream. In fact, it ruins it. Without the sour cream, it's amazing. I just made it, followed all the instructions except the last one, and it's brilliant. With sour cream: fucking sour, is what it is. Not comforting. Just sour.

Hungarians mostly just eat sour cream with a specific type of cabbage rolls called "sarmale" and in a tripe soup called "ciorba de burta". Those are both Romanian names, for (amazing) Romanian dishes we stole, which go amazingly well with sour cream. Other than that, there's no sour cream.

I make this soup at least once a month during the winter months, a really great soup.
