Koalas typically meet most of their daily need for water just by eating leaves. But researchers from the University of Sydney have documented an increase in sightings of koalas looking for water. Cameras near watering spots around the New South Wales, Australia town of Gunnedah showed koalas coming to drink, a cute sight that nonetheless may signal increased pressure from climate change.

I bet they couldn't find water on the leaves 🍃 so just licked the water -_- that's normal

  • A on April 9, 2017

Prove it's climate change doing this. Maybe they are just evolving to not only need leaves. Think with a little Socratic method dipsticks. P.S. Koalas are some of the dumbest creatures on earth, adorable but incredibly stupid due to lack of wrinkles on their brain's surface.

  • Maddie Bilheimer on April 10, 2017

It's probably because they're all in captivity and being in captivity they see these bowls full of water and when they start drinking from that they're like "damn this is easier…wow I want a lot of this"

  • Spiderific! on April 10, 2017

    Wait..koalas get stds??

  • KEMURI NINE4 on April 12, 2017

Such amazing and meaningful research!! Cheers to Doc and her team!

  • Nick Monks on May 7, 2017

I don't get the "climate change" naysaying below. Did her study not show that when the leaves had grown in dryer conditions, the koalas sought other sources of water? i.e., even if water was nearby, they preferred the leaves until a point where the leaves could not sustain their hydration needs.

  • frank Guan on May 22, 2017

There are thousands of more species that are threatened by us human, but people don't care because aren't cute.

  • Ronald Mitaxa on November 7, 2017

The myth of climate change strikes again.. The animal is thirsty and drinking water is easier than climbing to get leaves

  • JM TM on November 10, 2017

Destroy all other forms of life on your planet, turn Earth into Mars 2.0 then find a new planet inhabit it and do the same, and pray for some alien advanced race to find us and destroy us, because we are slow progressive destroyers of planets. We 'advance' on behalf of all other life surrounding us.

The koala habitats are being destroyed by developers, government & mining industries in areas of NSW & Victoria. It all about money 💰 💰.

  • Rae Anker on December 22, 2017

Koalas have always supplemented there feeding habits with water ,It is only now with camera traps and everyone owning a camera phone ,Images are uploaded to social media. But blame climate change it justifies funding for new research .

  • Wade Solomon on December 22, 2017

    Love Koalas cool

  • B uppy on January 28, 2018

Prolly too much salt in the tree leaves. Because if chem ag farming practices in Australia salt has become a problem in the water table. The koalas are feeling thirstier as a result.

  • Too many heavily salted snacks?

  • Gabrielle Pascual on March 25, 2018

A lot of the comments are just horrible. It just shows how little compassion people have for animals and the environment.

  • Hako2004 on April 8, 2018

Illogical assumptions and good science don't mix. The "belief" that they don't drink water is just that, a belief, and maybe a mistaken one.

  • John GTA on April 8, 2018

scientists discovered something even more weird – koalas urinating and pooping……

I love these creatures……I also hear they're going extinct. Sad times we're in.

  • Silver 559 on March 30, 2019

I thought Koalas would not drink water not knowing why they need it and dehydrate to death. It's only a matter of time.

  • soon they will start drinking beer….

  • Sling Blade on October 7, 2019

Here we go again… climate change. Now it's making Koalas get off the lazy arses and have a drink.

  • Kevin Warner on October 16, 2019

NICE TRY, Sunshine! In the 70s it was Global Cooling you were ranting about. Recently you started ranting GLOBAL WARMING (and when you were PROVEN to FAKE the data and snow kept falling)…started espousing CLIMATE CHANGE! NOPE! This isn't a PRODUCT CAMPAIGN, its the weather, and you DON'T get to flip flop! GLOBAL WARMING is YOUR CALL, and therefore THAT'S WHAT IT IS!!! We CAUGHT YOU, you LIED, now enjoy your FAILED campaign to make us Vegan Cave Dwellers! As for the Koalas, yes, they used to not need much if any water, now? Well its hot down under and they were a fur coat year-round…so, yeah!

  • ROCK CIRCUS on January 2, 2020

  • Mary Jane on January 28, 2020

People are training them to drink water by leaving bowls

  • blacklite911 on July 17, 2020

Climate change is getting so bad that Koalas might be forced to gain some wrinkles on their brain to survive!’

  • Mitchell Neuhoff on August 20, 2021

Actually only the males drink water because their territories change

  • Bronski Turboski on February 5, 2022
