Koalas typically meet most of their daily need for water just by eating leaves. But researchers from the University of Sydney have documented an increase in sightings of koalas looking for water. Cameras near watering spots around the New South Wales, Australia town of Gunnedah showed koalas coming to drink, a cute sight that nonetheless may signal increased pressure from climate change.

It's probably because they're all in captivity and being in captivity they see these bowls full of water and when they start drinking from that they're like "damn this is easier…wow I want a lot of this"

I don't get the "climate change" naysaying below. Did her study not show that when the leaves had grown in dryer conditions, the koalas sought other sources of water? i.e., even if water was nearby, they preferred the leaves until a point where the leaves could not sustain their hydration needs.
There are thousands of more species that are threatened by us human, but people don't care because aren't cute.

Destroy all other forms of life on your planet, turn Earth into Mars 2.0 then find a new planet inhabit it and do the same, and pray for some alien advanced race to find us and destroy us, because we are slow progressive destroyers of planets. The koala habitats are being destroyed by developers, government & mining industries in areas of NSW & Victoria. It all about money 💰 💰.
Koalas have always supplemented there feeding habits with water ,It is only now with camera traps and everyone owning a camera phone ,Images are uploaded to social media.But blame climate change it justifies funding for new research .

Prolly too much salt in the tree leaves. Because if chem ag farming practices in Australia salt has become a problem in the water table. The koalas are feeling thirstier as a result.
