Sadly, the truth is much more embarrassing for the human race. Millions of young kids have bought into an "us vs them" mindset based on skin color. Where acting civilized toward your fellow human is considered "acting white" and somehow a bad thing. Then, acting "gangsta" is just "being black", and is just peachy even though "gangstas" pride themselves in being criminals. And there you have it. The problem is not some ghostly racism by the cops (even if they're black they somehow do racism for whitey, ikr), but unchecked criminal behavior and racism in "the black community". Which is itself a racist idea, and only acts like a pressure cooker for more racist ideas. As the past has shown. Which should be the message. The worst part about it is that the media has bought the bullshit. The presenter has failed "his community" by not pointing at the actual elephant in the room, and National Geographic has failed me.
…So the narrative of this short piece is what? The police are doing a to good of a job? The "black community" don't know how to follow basic laws?
What are the races of the 46 people arrested for violent offenses?
For independent confirmation of what the presenter is saying, read Arrest Proof Yourself by Dale C. Carson and Wes Denham. Mr. Carson had the most arrests of any police officer in the state of Florida, served in the Justice Department and is now a defense attorney. He and Mr. Denham explain the how and why people, particularly minorities, end up on "The Electronic Plantation. If that term offends you, good. Read the book. If you have an interest in avoiding arrest and/or staying out of jail, read the book. it is amazingly easy to get arrested for miscellaneous bovine manure no matter who or what you are. The presenter said it was largely blacks who were arrested, not exclusively blacks. Anybody white, black , brown, Asian or the colors of the rainbow can end up on the electronic plantation. In case you missed it earlier, read the book. Get it from the library if you can't or don't want to buy it.
The number of violent crimes may actually be down because potential perpetrators see the area as aggressively well policed and conduct their crime elsewhere. It would be necessary to compare many statistics in the area.

Shame, shame on National Geographic. I know the facts behind this phony representation of these so called "statistics." Let's just say this story is a classic example of a saying that goes "statistics never lie, but liars use statistics."
I have an idea. How about we do both. Figure out why certain segments of America exonerated Michael Brown after he robbed a convenient store then tried to steal a police officer's gun after being told to stop waking down the middle of the street. AND we investigate why police agencies in places like Gretna sure seem like a profit center when they shouldn't be.
Because from where I sit I only ever hear each side talking past each other in dog whistles and nothing ever gets done because the concepts of cooperation and forgiveness have been on life support for years in this country.

I live in gretna 22 years born and raised. I've been stopped and jammed up to many times to count. I've never been arrested for any wrong doing on my part. Gives you an idea of how gretna police are.
I was arrested in Gretna for asking a police officer a question! My charge was interfering which was dropped with a $250 fine!
I avoid Gretna at all costs.

I've been in Gretna many times, and haven't had any problems. Maybe it's because I haven't committed any crimes. Although I have seen two black men arrested in Gretna. they stole my father's car one night, and I saw them the next night and chased them down to Gretna. I guess they would be in that statistic of black men who are arrested in Gretna. Two black men who stole a car!!
That is a misleading number because the court house for the entire parish is in Gretna so naturally some revenues are from Jefferson Parish police department.
Wasn’t this the same city that turned away people trying to escape from a 80% flooded city with no food, water, electricity, etc by shotgun brigade after Katrina
Law Abiding citizens that live in Gretna back their Police force 100% because they’re out there effectively keeping crime rates down by MAKING A LOT OF ARRESTS.
