Camera trap evidence in the Canadian Yukon shows snowshoe hares eat meat and are cannibals. A Canadian scientist discovered the phenomenon by accident while monitoring forest carcasses. The two-and-a-half-year long study found that hares ate from 20 of 161 carcasses—including birds, lynx, and even other hares. Hares likely eat meat to supplement their diets during subzero winter temperatures. The research is broadening scientists’ understanding of the fluidity of the herbivore diet.

All animals are capable of eating meat. Some are better suited to obtain meat than others and derive nutrition from it. Herbivores, omnivores, and carnivores are all on a spectrum.

Why are we so surprised, many "herbivores" (including lagamorpha) at their young during times of starvation or great danger. This isn't evil it's done because the mother believes that eating her young is a better fate for them than starving etc, like being eaten by a loved one is a more honorable death than whatever fate they have. This also help feed the mother so she can survive and give birth next season children who will actually survive to adulthood. It makes a lot of sense why hares would eat meat in times of starvation.

I have a friend that owns a rabbit and he feeda them leftover foods like fish and such but the rabbit do grow up healthy and fat tho
