Instead of tuna, can i use salmon?

  • nampaman on June 17, 2014

    Looks delicious!

I'm not saying frozen fish is bad, but you're off your nut to claim that fresh fish isn't more desirable. Fresh is always more desirable whether it be protein or produce, especially in the case of seafood and even more so in raw preparations.

I've been a fan of Chef John for a while but this is simply madness. I guess I had a sheltered life, I never heard of such a thing and the combo of ingredients is freaking me out.

That Ringo Star and compose pun was brilliant. Almost subLIME even.

One of the reasons I love this channel is cause we don't have to watch you chef john eat it then say "mmmm" immediately after like any other cooking channel. Like they were ever gonna say "gross!"

  • mikeabcable on July 5, 2014

I would go with some mustard. I need white wine too.

  • OutOfTheBookClub on July 7, 2014

John, this sounds delicious, and very much like the "ota ika" that we would eat in the Tonga Islands.  It's yummy yummy yummy!  Here's an ota ika recipe: http://www.betterrecipes.com/blogs/daily-dish/2011/08/24/tongan-ota-ika/

Chef John, I have family from Guam from my step dads side & this dish reminded me of this fabulous dish I had at one of their family parties which were all about food. It was very rare cubed deer meat sitting in what I noticed soy, garlic, red/green oinon, lime, these Tic Tac sized red chillies, sesame seeds. It was so good. Would love if you could find a deer tar tar recipe.

  • Timothy Lehmann on June 5, 2015

    As always… enjoy! 🙂

  • ichaukan on July 17, 2015

You put the lime in the coconut… that you previously put in the tuna tartare, and then you eat it all up.

  • patris lemair on September 11, 2015

    You are so funny 💋💋💋

  • Mark Simons on May 17, 2016

I'd have expected to hear a crunching sound as the chip entered the mouth. Is there some special sort of eating technique associated with this dish?

  • Ray McKenzie on June 2, 2016

Chef John! This looks delicious. I've searched but I don't see a traditional steak tartare in your recipes? I love the table side dish at Cafe Claude. Any chance of doing something similar?

    Love the recipes!

hahahahaha ''you are the star of your tuna tartar''!!!!

  • Ted Strauss on January 18, 2017

John used the expression "better for you" at least 3 times in this video. I think he's trying to brainwash us.

  • Metemi on October 8, 2017

You had me at "brain eating parasites". 🙂

First at all, English is not my first language, it's the second out of 5 but… This is Very confusing..
I've saw your statement in another video: "do not used frozen tuna"
"this recipe will not work with frozen tuna"
    "You need fresh tuna"
The funny thing is that it was a very, very similar recipe.
    A noticeable dichotomy.
I totally and completely remember that, since I'm a Tuna lover and sometimes I've used from frozen. I'm very curious about what made you changed your mind.

  • DreamPen on February 21, 2019

    I <3 you, Chef John. And that's because I <3 tuna tartare.

  • Caramon Majere on May 22, 2019

Gordon Ramsay would drop 20 F-Bombs if he found out you used frozen fish, lol.

Not that he'd really taste any difference….

  • moogie1954 on August 14, 2019

I would put that into some rice spring roll wrappers and serve it with peanut sauce! Of course, I will put almost anything into spring roll wrappers and dip it in peanut sauce! I think I have a problem with peanut sauce…. Is it wrong to dip sesame crackers into peanut sauce? That reminds me, I need to whip up some more peanut sauce!
