Tesla Shows Amazing Video of 4680 Battery Pack Assembly webfi network



Today Tesla recruitment leader Tobias Marmann shared this amazing video, showing how Tesla builds its much-expected 4680 battery packs.

“So mesmerizing to watch. Battery cell assembly at Tesla. Also, exciting to be working at Tesla, where we are at the forefront of production innovation. Many Gigafactories and Megafactories have been announced by others (which is great!), but many are yet to be built. Join us and help push the boundaries of cell development and cell production in Germany, China or the USA,” Marmann wrote on his Linkedin page, sharing a link to Tesla Careers, where you can see all the positions Tesla is hiring globally, including 4680 battery production positions.

    One of the Most Important Advantages of the 4680 is the Tab-less Design. Charging Speed will be Greatly Enhanced (almost as good as the Maxwell SuperCaps) because of Better Heat Dissipation and Current Flow to the Cell. This is the Biggest Breakthrough for Li Ion Batts.

    Cost is the greatest advantage. Lower weight and higher energy density mean less batteries with the same range. Larger batteries are cheaper per kilowatt. Money. Batteries cost less Tesla margins go up and customers pay less. With inflation it is hard to see but if during inflation cost don't rise it is because Tesla is finding ways to cut cost and also improve quality. Hard to do. Tesla A+ 👍

    Range depends on capacity and capacity depends on amount of cells.It is obvious they put less cells or use higher too and bottom buffer than proven cells.

    There are many reason why they can do this. One is they don't want all people want 4680 versions since there are not enough those cells for everything. Elon also announced that 4680 price should meet current cells by the end of this year. Before that happens, it's not wise to make huge packs. They need production volume though, to push the price down and polish the process.
    We must also remember that in battery day, Elon promised the full capacity and lowest costs to be available by 2025. 4680 is over year behind the original schedule.

    I would rather have the Austin 4680 even if it does have a slightly lower range, because it weighs a over a hundred pounds less than the other model Ys. This is even more significant than a few miles in range, IF you care about the handling performance. As the EVs shed weight with advances in energy density and control, the superiority of an EV over ICE will be obvious even to real motorheads.

    All the Carr's batteries will be software limited to make sure they don't cannibalise the other cars without 4680s until all cars either have them or lfp batteries

    My thought are that you simply don't get it.. You've never gotten it when it comes to the 4680 battery. Tesla has to continue to do what produces the most vehicles. It's number of vehicles that is Tesla's problem not milage. They are addressing mileage for now with their continued expansion of their charging stations. As they increase the number of batteries they can produce and thus increase they number of cars they can put on the road they will address range later if ever. But until they can get production closer to the demand they will continue to keep range in check. The range is adequate for the US and European market so they will keep the range they have now while increasing production. It's been that way for some time now and it will continue to be that way. The 4680 battery is important now because they can product them in massive numbers not because they could increase range. Tesla can't increase range and max out production till lots more places are making 4680 batteries. Austin is pushing the battery pack lines for all they can get now and can't really ramp up to the numbers of cars they need. Get your mind off of range and pay attention to what matters now.. PRODUCTION… CARS ON THE ROAD… Tesla simply must get production up or sales will go to the other producers by default. Tesla needs millions of cars with adequate not hundreds of thousands of cars with more mileage. Tesla will continue to match or slightly exceed the mileage the other manufactures are providing while cutting into the wait times for delivery.

    They are being Tesla by Tesla employees first to make sure nothing goes wrong with this new technology. After it’s verified then they’ll do some come of updates to increase range. They already said on battery day the range would increase by 54%

    Tesla is being very careful to avoid the Osborne effect, where news of a new technology can hurt (or kill off) existing sales. I believe that the Tesla 4680 batteries are in fact the "Million Mile" batteries that Tesla teased many years ago. I think that the key problem is that Tesla cannot supply enough 4680 batteries to power their whole fleet of new EVs with only their small Kato Road 4680 battery factory in CA. Including the Semis, and upcoming Cybertrucks that rely on the 4680 batteries to meet the top claims of range, low cost, and performance. So they scaled back the media hype, scaled back the pack size, and undersold the new batteries capabilities. They put a smaller pack in the new Model Y because then they could keep the 2170 battery powered Model Y as the longest range version, and keep its price and value high. If Tesla came out with a comparably sized 4680 pack which lasted over a million miles and offered 475 miles of range (and better performance) who would be interested in spending $63K on the older model that "only" gets 330 EV miles of range. Plus, until the two upcoming Tesla 4680 battery factories (in Texas and Germany) come online and ramp up production, Tesla doesn't want frustrated customers anxiously waiting to get the new, cool, superior, 4680 battery technology, just because they cannot build them fast enough. And seeing that Tesla's EV competition is still struggling to catch up with their current EV's lesser range and performance capabilities, Tesla can trickle out their new technology without shooting themselves in the foot.
