The Great Barrier Reef May Be Dying Faster Than We Thought | National Geographic ctm magazine

The latest surveys spell more bad news for the Great Barrier Reef. Following a record high water surface temperature and mass bleaching event in 2016, the Australian icon may be on track for a similar event this year. Aerial and underwater footage from 2016 and 2017, shown in this video, shows the extent of the bleaching and die-off, which has already impacted large portions of the reef.

It has already been declared dead. WTF this video is late AF.

  • oilsmoke7.62 on March 20, 2017

    this is so fucking sad.

  • Joy Yu on March 20, 2017

this is really sad, i was there last year and the places where our boat dropped us off was still spectacular, however, i couldnt help but notice that no briefs were given about not touching the corals and damaging the reefs, but ultimately, global warming is going to do the most damage to the most beloved places on earth.

  • Anonymoose on March 21, 2017

This is heartbreaking. It's not replaceable, not repairable, and this country now has an idiot pretending to be our "President" who thinks that climate change is a hoax.

  • Luis Martinez on March 21, 2017

Holy fuck, what beautiful world we've destroyed.

  • Leo J on March 21, 2017

Glaciers are melting, reefs are bleaching, species are disappearing at an unprecedented rate. The Earth is dying but it's not our fault…. and I'm having dreams of large meteors and epic floods.

  • Miguel Robledo on March 21, 2017

"We The people" have let this happen, by allowing corporations to fund interest groups which In turn fund campaigns for politicians. It's time for the people to run the government again and protect our planet earth, the home we've ever known

  • JackAttack on March 21, 2017

For those who dont believe in global warming, heres a fact. Mid febuarys for me allways used to involve heavy jackets and snow every month or so. Its snowed like 3 times this winter, 2 of which melted later in the day. I wear hoodies now because its nowhere near as cold as it used to be. Once or twice years ago it went inti the negative degrees. But until now, a few weeks ago it was almost in the 70 degree range, to where I could wear shorts and a t shirt, when I SHOULD have been wearing a heavy jacket and boots.

  • Dakota Hope on March 21, 2017

    how can we help?

  • Schelby Renea on March 21, 2017

How can we help? I want to help!

But the Donald's priority is to make oil companies richer, because the real tragedy would be if these oil managers didn't get an extra couple of millions for destroying our world. These poor managers! Everybody knows you can't live a decent life with less than 10 million dollars a year!

  • Ultragreenyellow56 on March 21, 2017

less then 10% unaffected… I got a bad feeling it might be to late to save a good portion of the reef… 😔

  • MudkipGirl111 on March 21, 2017

This makes me very upset, I've always wanted to go scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef but it's too late now I guess. Wish we can help.

The feeling of sorrow when you know american singer music video has a 'lot' viewer than this or any 'dying planet' video.

  • danyjr on April 10, 2017

great music! anyone knows what it is?

  • Rocky Bos on April 15, 2017

If you people really cared about the environment you would go Vegan and stop supporting animal agriculture which is the leading cause of such events at this.. cmon now.. this planet is the only reason we are here.. nothing in this life is more important than this earth.. we owe him/her our lives

  • alper on June 23, 2017

People are nature killers. We are very harmful to the world.

  • FoxxA on September 2, 2017

ok, this is a natural thing its not affected that much from us humans, the main thing doing this is the coral itself and starfish as its there food source. starfish such as the crown of thorns is overpopulated and eating lots of the nutrients from the coral causing the bleaching

  • LightNing on March 11, 2018

😢It hurts to see the fish swimming trough dead coral because THAT ISN’T HOW IT IS SUPOSED TO BE!!! 😡😡

  • Irene on April 6, 2018

    Felt emotional

  • Cameron Bonnett on April 30, 2018

This is terrible what people do to this planet, My son is 2 and I can see us having to get off this rock within his lifetime. We will probably just do it again to another planet. We are destroyers of worlds. Its just like the modest mouse song

  • IggyTs on July 9, 2018

Reefs have been dying for billions of years. They will outlive us by billions more.

  • Lettuce on March 23, 2019

Monsters really do exist. And it’s us. The most dangerous species.

  • Mick Fowler on November 7, 2019

Federal Enviromental Misister for Australia Sussan Ley visited the reef for herself amid the ferore of all the propeganda spewing about said issue. She witnessed the opposite as to what the world is being fed. Her own words.!
Also, the Southern Barrier Reef has actually grown by over 200%
The Inuits are complaining of too much ice and snow and, the big Kehuna that is the USA has pulled out of everything.
    Read between the lines folks…

  • Mick Fowler on November 7, 2019

Furthermore, there are coral growths on other parts of our planet flourishing in higher temperatures than Australia.
These temperatures here are just fine and dandy. The only way I can describe it..

  • André Kuyper on February 18, 2020

Im 200% sure windmills are the problem of killing it! They produce a low frequent sound that spreads around till 50/60 km. A lot of sealife need low far sounds to navigate and survive but windmills are destroing the whole world whit there so called non delivering clean, horizon killing energie.
I wish i could stay away from windmills but thats a no go imsure that for nature its a fact and i'm hypersensetive but i'm sure nature is more sensetive then i am!
Get rid of all windmills at about 100kmters around the reef!
Last chance as i see it dieing but im sure!

  • Kurt Hunter on March 7, 2020

    Hope the temps subside

The Barrier Reef is doing fine, as of march 14, 2020. Like polar bears, coral reefs are doing fine | CFACT Quit crying wolf.

  • Junho Lee on March 23, 2021

    Overly dramatic

  • BMW Drift 93300 on April 23, 2021

The major issue is the global warming which has already raised the tempreature of the oceans up to a point that the coral reefs can't handle it so they are Dying , 50% of all of the coral reefs in the world were announced dead , The solution to all of our problems is to turn our Energy into a better and clean source which is renewable energy like sun and wind.
Also we had to stop the excessive fishing on the bottom of the ocean using the mega nets which is dragged on the floor and destroying everything in it is way .
The Plastic also is a threat to the living beings of the corals which it is relying on as one of the source of foods .
