As a cheesemonger, I'll jump on the Parm wagon too. Please dont buy the prepackaged, grated and shredded, 'Real Parmigiano' from companies like Belgoioso. They do use real parm but add anticaking agents like corn starch or cellulose to keep it from clumping. A full 20% or what you pay Parm prices for is corn byproduct or ground up paper…20%! Find a good cheese shop or COOP that grates Parm in house.
Its 18-19eur per kilo here in Greece. As a rule, readily pregrated or portioned cheeses in small packages in the supermarket are double+ the deli counter price.
These noodles are too dente ;-P
If we could buy just 15 – 20 cents worth at a time, it would be affordable. Unfortunately, until that's possible, I've gotta stick with the fake stuff. Nice try, though! 🙂
My local specialty grocer has small shards of parmigiano Reggiano called “orphans”. Two or three bucks apiece and they last for weeks if not months.
If it doesn’t come from those 5 regions, it isn’t Parmesan. It’s Italian hard cheese.
Edit: I think it also has to be aged for 2 years. It’s been a while since I’ve read my Parmesan facts.
I wish I could like a video 50 times.
If only I actually liked it. Pecorino works better for me.
Haaa…your the best! IO SONNO ITALIANO, DI Pavia, Lombardia. Living in SW, FL. A tip>> Make your own Cheese!! Not hard at all, seriously. Even soda-drinking American is might learn how. Maybe 🙂
Then>>grow a kitchen garden, fruit orchard, mushrooms,…. Bigger Fools than you have done so for centuries! 🙂
Gonna try ranching some ESCARGOT next. After all, how hard can they be to round-up?! Sempre Avanti, amico!
Any thoughts on the Costco PR? I find it to be bitter. Is that normal?
Especially compared to meat prices, parmesan is cheap. $20 a pound is normal for a good ribeye, and cheese has a mucher smaller serving size in comparison.
Nice to see the math! I've been wanting to buy good parmesan for a while now but I've never been sure how much it'll actually cost me. To be honest I've never bought any of the grateable cheeses because I just wasn't sure if it was worth it. Very happy to see that I'll only have to spend a small amount per serving.
Try buying 4 grams of cheese.
I didn't even know this was a discussion. Who buys grated cheese in a can or any other container other than a WHEEL? It's called grated because that's what you have to do. So no more grating on CHEF.
this is cringe
I buy it because it’s worth it! The flavor is amazing
The only thing Kraft saw dust Parm belongs on is SPAGHETTIOS.
I am grateful
B.S. = bovine scat
I need to get a small cheese grater and start doing that. All I have is the old box grater. I have always used the stuff in the cardboard tube. It was good, but I'll bet the fresh stuff is a 100% better.
