I’m excited to show you my take on one of America’s strangest hamburgers, and certainly the hamburger with the strangest name. But don’t worry, this is 100% slug free. The name comes from the fact that these used to cost a nickel, and way back when, the slang term for nickel was “slug.” Enjoy!

    I was told the term "slug" came about because the Nickel matched the size and weight of slugs removed from electrical boxes. When a Nickel would buy a soda from a vending machine more than one boy tried one. A little bit of work on dad's whet and Jr.was a Nickel richer.

    The secret in making the outside very crispy. Moderate crispiness is ordinary but a very crunchy outside make this burger great, despite being mostly bread and overcooking it.

    Pro tip, put at least one sauce/condiment on the bottom below the patty. In order of importance depending on what all you are using 1) mayo, 2) ketchup, 3) mustard. So if it's just ketchup mustard, at least some ketchup on bottom. If it's mayo mustard, at least some mayo on bottom. etc

    My Dad always said they stretched things out all the time and didn't waste food. One of his favorites was old stale cornbread in a glass of whole milk. Often that was breakfast for him. Then a school lunch and then worry about dinner. Times have changed.

    It's a meatloaf burger.
    Would mixed oats,or bread crumbs, or potato, egg in to stretch out how much meat had to make a meal. And I couldn't tell difference and actually preferred it as it had more flavor and seasoning spices than just a hunk of meat.

  • Potato flakes would seem to guarantee a super bland result. I've tried it in meatloaf. Perhaps at the least it would be very generously salted if using those.

  • I'd go stupid deluxe: I'd put mayo on the bun. Oh, and save that oil — infused with beef drippings, it can be combined with flour and milk (and/or water) to make a gravy, to put on the instant mashed potatoes that you'd serve NEXT to the slugburger (a far superior use of the potato flakes as far as I am concerned). Oh and I guess I'd go stupid deluxe and use corn or canola oil too. Soybean oil, heated, or just standing long enough, gets a funky flavor. Back in the day? I'd guess lard or tallow. All that fat? Just the thing if you're working like a yeoman all day. Our modern electronics has spoiled us.

    When dealing with fillers you want the pregelatinzed version, aka flaked: barley, rice, oats, or corn – and not meal.
    You also want the really cheap meat – like 70:30 / 80:20 – as the carb filler will absorb the extra fat.

    This narration makes it tough to watch.
