I miss everything, total isolation loss of all my memories.. replaced by horrible phantom smells that make me cringe 24/7 365 a year of horror, so sad. Feel filthy e ery minute, feel isolated e ery minute, feel sad w ery second and alone.

I have congenital anosmia due to having Kallmann syndrome.

I still can detect certain aromatics or caustic substances such as bleach or vinegar due to the activation of the trigeminal nerve at the back of the throat but that is more of a sense of taste rather than smell. It is a system that is totally separate from the normal olfactory system.

I am very sensitive to the texture of food for some reason which makes me a fussy eater.

The other aspects of having Kallmann syndrome affect my life more than my anosmia but I think I have experienced most of the bad aspects of not being able to smell such as eating spoiled food, leaving the oven on too long and not being aware of personal hygiene and BO when I was teenager.

There are some smells I perhaps would like to experience but it is not something I think about it every day. I think it must be worse for the people with acquired anosmia as they will be more aware of what they are missing out on.

    Anyone here because of COVID

  • Tkush Kelley on October 12, 2020

I was born without the sense of smell, seeing this video and reading the comments, gave a feeling of hopefulness for a split second, because I no longer felt alone, but it was fleeting, because there are so many layers of me that make me different, as well as others, can't help but to feel abnormal and different, that makes me feel broken, and broken makes me feel alone, and that lead to isolation, because it's easier feeling lonely because you choose to stay by yourself and alone(makes you feel like you have some type of control over yourself)
than to be surrounded by others but still feel alone, thats true loneliness. Plus when they brought up the smell of their children, i think my heart shattered and im now forever traumatized after realizing ill never know what my daughter smells like, but others will, so a whole part of her is missing..

    Post Covid.

  • Johnatan Skyzer on October 19, 2020

I currently have covid, I can't taste or smell anything. It's so weird. I just found out there are people who go their lives like this. It's weird. Honestly. I literally licked deodorant that I sprayed on my hand and it tasted like nothing. I genuinely would be concerned about getting poisoned if this were a long-term thing.

I don't have Sense of Smell. I knew it since when I was in grade 2 but I don't know if it since when I was born and sad to say that nobody believes in me even my parents. When I was in high school, I stayed in my aunt's house and they discovered that I don't have a sense of Smell and they told my parents. I thought I only have this problem. I hope that I could smell someday in my life. How I wish to have it.

  • Eduardo Ferdinandi on January 31, 2021

I can only sense harsh chemicals when they’re close to my nose, and I can feel mint but it just feels like cold air but only when really close to my nose. I honestly don’t care about not smelling, it’s probably for the best since I apparently have terrible smelling feet.

  • Cat on February 12, 2021

I realized that I lost my sense of smell when I tried to smell a candle. I was sick at first which didnt stop me from smelling. But as I got better from being sick, my sense of smell started going away. It’s been a month now and I have completely forgot how my husband smells like, what roses smell, lemon. I can’t take naps due to the fact that I’m scared of a fire breaking out and not being able to smell it.

I have anosmia and relate to all of this. I even had a dream once that I could smell honey and it seemed so real! I used to not care that I couldn’t smell but as I get older I think it makes me more and more depressed that I cant experience life in the way most people can.

  • Girl Who Can't Smell on August 29, 2021

I have congenital anosmia. Been advocating for the recognition of
this condition too because when I grew up…I had no one to turn to. I used
to feel like not many people could
understand. It affected me in many ways. I couldn't tell others because I
learned that a barrage of questions such as "but can you taste?" or
"Are you sure?" would ensue. Now I raise awareness about anosmia so no
one else feels they are alone. Glad there are more videos such as these. Thank you!
