#VelshiBannedBookClub: Writing Poverty With #NickelandDimed ctm magazine

“Nickel and Dimed” is the first of many books to highlight the very real experience of being working-poor in America. Sarah Smarsh’s “Heartland” and Stephanie Land’s “Maid” are groundbreaking first hand accounts of their lived experience. These books and their authors illuminate aspects of our nation that many would prefer remain shrouded in darkness: including systems of oppression and people – 37.2 million of them – living below the poverty line in America today. It also directly addresses the American can-do spirit, the “pick yourself up from your bootstraps” mentality and proves quite pointedly that it is a fallacy. Impossible and inconceivable for most.

I own nickel and dimed, it’s absolutely right on the money!!!! I personally have 20000.00 in credit card debt from medical, home, dental, expenses! I’m 66 and will never pay that off! My father passed away with over 80000.00 in debt from medical and other expenses! There is absolutely no hope everyday. And I have been working since age 12! And yes still working!

Excellent segment! Ehrenreich’s passing is such a huge loss. By the way, who bans these books & where are they banned from exactly?

  • Elena Latici on September 20, 2022

A book of this nature was written many years ago (1914) by English author Robert Tressell, its called the Ragged Trousered Philanthropists. It seems that the progress made to make a more egalitarian society after WW2 have been eroded. The situation is similar here in the UK and probably throughout the Western world which is reflected in the lurch toward right wing nationalistic politics.

We have not created enough affordable housing over the past 20+ years

  • 2chuck on September 20, 2022

People making minimum wage can't even afford to live in their car anymore. (Minimum wage won't even get you a junker car). There is a very valid reason there are so many living in tents under Freeway Overpasses and it's getting worse. It's outrageous and at some point, when food becomes unaffordable it's going to spill into the streets. When people lose all hope, they lose it. There is something very basic wrong with our Society when average people working full time can't afford a roof and food.

Nickel and Dimed was a great book. I learned a lot from it. It was recommended to me by my former sociology processor.

"Nickel and Dimed" opened my mind when I read it back in middle school, and I'm SHOCKED it's on a list of banned books

37.2 MILLION living below the poverty line – let that sink in please – as the number of the wealthy, grow rapidly, especially since 2017 tax cut for the rich, during the reign of Optimus Crime of Orange.

I still don't understand how its even legal to ban books in a free country. Conservatives sure are awful human beings.

  • hdtvcamera1 on September 20, 2022

MSNBC deserves their lowest rated status of the world's lowest credibility rating globally American media.
I've been watching as an experiment. When networks show a news story, then show your repot for how radically out of touch and deceptive your coverage is… You have a serious problem.
Do you realize there are compilation reels showing how many stories MSNBC has falsely reported on. The problem is so overwhelming its broken down by news anchors.
    This is truly pathetic

Talk more about this, Less about race!!!!!

That is a true quote. You have to balance your own family while ripping and running for peanuts. All types of conditions in the work place.

The Republican Party is eventually coming for your freedoms of speech and how you live your life in general.. The only thing keeping them at bay is the Democratic Party.

I read Nickel & Dimed and can recommend it highly. It's an excellent book and breaks down to language and ideas easily understood

Excellent book…and it's all true..still relevant today…and now another one can be written about teachers, firefighters, local govt workers, social service professionals, retail management professionals, healthcare industry workers: living in their cars, working double, triple shifts, not able to afford housing, drowning in loans & debt…America needs to change now!!!

BEWARE TRUE AMERICANS! You Tube with many other social media sights are being flooded with white supremacy idiots and Russians. They keep pushing the big lie and racism. Do not reply back to these fools because you can't argue with stupidity. You can't argue with people with such hatred. You can't argue with people whose brick wall is like Trump's. Don't waste anytime with those traitors. Just remember Jan. 6, 2021 as an example of this fools. Vote for Democracy, not Trumpocracy. This is what you get with the Republican Party. BANNED BOOKS that reveal the truth.

  • Charlie Siefert on September 20, 2022

I've been dirt poor for a long time and have always done as much as I can (probably more than I am really able to) to help other poor folks. I have literally given away most everything I've owned over the past 25 years. The so called philanthropists don't make any where near that kind of effort (maybe with the exception of Bill Gates, but he's still one of the richest people in the world)

  • cyberash3000 on September 20, 2022

People can get Out of Poverty, but they can also Get Back In!!. I ran away from home in the 70's due to my Mom's suicide n my Dad's Alcoholism and Abuse.
I worked on fishing boats, as a food n cockrale waitress and nurse aid. I saved up enough to go to Community College, later Nursing School (via grants and scholorshps). I was a working RN for over 30 yrs, married to a physician for 1/2 that time. He left me for his Office Nurse and due to Florida man oriented divorce laws, I ended up with a few yrs of alimony
To make a long story short, I ended up needing multiple spinal surgeries and had to leave Nursing, followed by losing my home in 2008. I left Florida for a cheaper cost of living state and now live in a Horrible apartment because I live on Less Than $1000/mo. My rent n utilities just went up 30 percent, so I could end up on the Streets at 60 yrs old!
My MD husband? Lives in Franklin Ten in a $5 million mansion with his 5th wife!
It Can Happen to AMYONE in this country who is not Independently Wealthy!

I think everyone thinks that YOU should getYOURSELF out of poverty. And the very worst are those that have benefitted from all manner of “help”, but wholly cow, you should not expect any help from them. But, I have to say, from the look of the people with money, I’d rather be poor.

An excellent book, “Nickel and Dimed!” I lived the story myself in my younger years, working two minimum wage jobs together just to survive.

  • John Penley on September 20, 2022

    I loved this book…

  • James Bailey on September 20, 2022

What Ehrenreich wrote about is what the Trump Nightmare Years are making abundantly clear. The Republican Party has only enmity for the principle enshrined in our Constitution, that the purpose of government is to provide for the general welfare.
