Summary of this Tutorial:

Start by installing and activating the Milestone plugin.

This will add a new widget under Apperarance, Widgets.

Adjust the date and you should be good.

To add a countdown install and activate the WordPress Countdown plugin.

Then add the following shortcode: [wpc_countdown targetdate=”2014-10-17″]

Unfortinatly there is not a built in widget for this plugin.

    WordPress may be using the updated version of milestone. I'm not sure what they mean when they wrote for the visibility section, e.g. "show" if "author" is "xx". How can this be overcome?
