Why Most U.K Money Will Still Feature Queen Elizabeth II for Years to Come | WSJ ctm magazine

Queen Elizabeth II’s portrait has been on U.K. currency since the early ‘60s. With Charles III now assuming the throne, WSJ speaks with former Royal Mint artist Jody Clark to understand the complicated process of designing a new coin and why an update will take a while.

  • Charles is ridiculously old and going by his face being red all the time not in the best health possible. What's the point of spending the money to change the currency if they're going to have to do it again within 10 years?

In Denmark, we do get change back sometimes that depict the last monarch, Frederik IX. He died in January 1972, and Margrethe II is, as of Elizabeth’s death, the longest reigning living monarch in the world. It’s always quite novel to get coins with his face on it instead of hers, and I feel in a couple decades, it’ll be the same for the British.

Talking about money during a funeral is about the most crass thing any newspaper could do. I never thought the Wall Street Journal was this vulgar.

Maybe it's time to remove royals from coins and bills and put really iconic people instead, like Benny Hill, Jonny Rotten or John Cleese.

I think Australia and Canada might just remove the monarch from their currency. Because no shade on Charles but he isn't the youngest so it would be kinda a waste to reprint, only to have to do it again a couple of years later.

  • Frank Winds on September 20, 2022

Unlike other rich families, the royals are given favorable treatment by the government. Neither Charles nor his siblings will have to pay inheritance tax on whatever assets are passed down from their mother, thanks to a 1993 agreement with the government. Yet the public has little chance of learning how much that inheritance will be. The royal finances are shrouded in fog.
